The middle title "Chrishell" was a portmanteau title she invented to honor the unique birth circumstances. Her mother gave birth to her child at an Shell station. Chris, a Shell station attendant, was there to assist her with her delivery. Strause, however, denies any information about her birth. She claims her mother was suffering from problems with her car and pulled into a gas station. While waiting at the car station, she entered pre-labor, and the attendant at the car truly helped her get to an emergency room. Strause was born in a hospital. Her mother separated from her biological father who was half Japanese/half Spanish before she knew she was expecting. Jeff is her stepfather. Chrishell Strause missed a full year of middle school because she was confined in tent. Strause told of washing her hair in the river and using food stamps to hide her identity from her peers. When she was 10, her parents were struggling with mental illness and addiction. Strause joined the Worldwide Church of God for a time. Strause describes Strause as an independent female who was self-righteous and did not have a steady job.
